  • PottyMouth transforms completely unstructured and untrusted text to valid, nice-looking, completely safe XHTML. PottyMouth is designed to handle input text from non-technical, potentially careless or malicious users. It produces HTML that is completely safe, programmatically and visually, to include on any web page. PottyMouth is ideal for displaying blog comments, text email bodies in a web mail application or mailing list web archive, or any text fields on any site with user input text, such as a social networking, dating, or community site. In short, any input which is displayed in HTML and is input as text by a non-technical and/or untrusted user.

It is also possible to execute Pig Latin programs in a "local" mode (without Hadoop cluster), in which case all processing takes place in a single local JVM.
  • Hadoop On Demand is a system for provisioning and managing independent Hadoop MapReduce and HDFS instances on a shared cluster of nodes. HOD is a tool that makes it easy for administrators and users to quickly setup and use Hadoop.

Great Family Sushi Dining

Samurai Sushi Boat provided the venue for a fine Mother's Day dinner out. Sitting side by side at a counter facing the sushi chefs, the family was treated to a regatta of boats bearing the delectables they created. As the sushi dishes paraded by, we pulled them off the boats, sampling and exploring the repertoire.

While most of us were content with the ebi (shrimp), california rolls, ninja rolls, gyoza and so forth, the udon noodles with chicken suited our 8 year old just fine. The prizes under some of the dishes gets the youth vote, too!

Samurai Sushi Boat will likely never win any awards for their sushi. But on this evening, our objective was family dining; training wheel fare for the kids and some good food for the grups. And Samurai Sushi Boat met all of those objectives.

(via RSS Feeds For Google Video)

Google has announced an "alpha" release of RSS feeds for Google Video. You can basically turn any Google Video search results URL into an RSS feed by replacing the "videosearch?q=" portion with "videofeed?type=search&q=" and adding "&num=20&output=rss" at the end. For example:

http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=family+guy

Becomes:

http://video.google.com/videofeed?type=search&q=family+guy&num=20&output=rss

Don't buy Home Depot's power washers

The Husky 1300 psi power washer that Home Depot sells are worthless. They don't reach 1300 psi and when they work at all they take a long time (at least 10 minutes) to reach their maximum pressure. Today, the piece of junk I bought last year just wouldn't pressurize at all. I ran it for twenty minutes before I finally gave up. You're better off getting a good nozzle for a garden hose, seriously. I'll try Sears next.

Skywalker Channels Cheney

Not exactly a tale of two Georges but I gotta talk about the Star Wars movie and a few Georges. Not to worry, I'm not gonna ladle out the spoilers. So, as mentioned in my previous post, I saw the film from Lucas this morning. It was great! Shmaltz! Light sabers! Dogfight combat! IOW, a classic. However, one of the memorable moments (at least for g'rups) is a line from the darkening Skywalker. In an obvious allusion to Bush, Anakin is deluding himself that he's bringing peace and tranquility to the galaxy, declaring "If you're not with me you're my enemy." The vast left wing conspiracy is correct, Bush is The Dark Side.

Childhood Revisited

I vividly remember seeing the first Star Wars at the Coronet in San Francisco. I'm on my way to the Century 16 in Mountain View to see Revenge of the Sith. My little ones are totally jealous, they'll have to wait for a matinee showing that doesn't conflict school, sorry kiddos!

The NY Taxi moblog

Check out the street scenes of New York not for the photography per se but the succession of them. They capture the intensity, the mysteries and the smells of New York.
Sometimes New York just smells intensely mysterious but that's probably me being a left coaster.

Open Source Radio and podcasts over the air

The San Francisco Chronicle reported today about kyouradio.com. Billed as "Open Source Radio", they have displaced Don Imus with podcasts. The choice of podcast topics (martini mixing, cats and ramblings about mortality) doesn't sound like a winner but I'd imagine integrating Technorati's link statistics and tags as a feedback mechanism to determine what podcasts are succeeding and which ones aren't. Adaptive radio programming where people vote for what to hear at drive time with their blog links!

Mentoring

Sometimes leading someone else to a solution is much more gratifying than finding the answer myself.
Reminds me of the old proverb, Give A Man A Fish:
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
